Roanoke Rapids Celebrates America's 250th Anniversary with Liberty on Main
ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — Roanoke Rapids will mark America's semiquincentennial with Liberty on Main, a free Independence Day parade and festival on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at the Kirkwood Adams Community Center.
The event begins at 10 a.m., kicking off with a patriotic parade from 1500 Hamilton Street, onward to the Community Center, followed by a flag ceremony led by Boy Scouts of America Troop 144 and a performance of the Star-Spangled Banner by Roneek Webb. Ken Wilson of the North Carolina Sons of the American Revolution Speaker's Bureau will deliver a historical address connecting Halifax County to the story of American independence.
"Liberty on Main shows what is possible when local businesses, nonprofits, residents, and community partners come together," said Ashley Thomas, Main Street Development Director for the City of Roanoke Rapids. “A celebration like this takes a committed team and a community that shows up. That's exactly what we have in Roanoke Rapids.”
Brightspeed, the nation’s third-largest fiber broadband builder, has signed on as the Founding Year Title Sponsor for Liberty on Main, with support designated for the July 4th celebration and future Main Street community programming.
“At Brightspeed, we believe strong communities are built through strong local partnerships,” said Sabrina Anderson, local marketing manager at Brightspeed. “Supporting Main Street activities and celebrations is one way we can invest in the people and neighborhoods we serve every day.”
What to Expect
The festival will feature more than 50 vendors, live performances, veteran and military recognition, and family activities throughout the afternoon. A 30-foot trailer with The North Carolina Vietnam Wall will be on display courtesy of AMVETS, students from Ms. Tiffany's Dance School will perform, and a Gospel Extravaganza featuring Bishop Albert Harrison and the Gospel Tones and Da Redeemed Sons of Elizabeth City begins at1:30 p.m. Attendees can meet players from Football Club Roanoke on-site. Families are encouraged to pack a towel for the Fire Truck Splash Down provided by the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department.
Community Support
Free hotdogs and bottled water will be distributed while supplies last courtesy of Ashley's Stylez 252, Anchor'D Fitness and the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce. A giveback tent operated by His Hands of Roanoke Valley Community Outreach Center in partnership with Brightspreed will offer items free to community members from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. RC BounceHouse will provide a kids zone with inflatable game play, Wrenn's Funeral Home donated the 25-by-15-foot American flag that will open the day; Dominion Energy is providing bucket truck support for the raising. Additional support comes from the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department, Police Department and Public Works, local veteran organizations, and the many vendors, performers, volunteers, and community groups participating throughout the day.
WaveMakers, the City's youth entrepreneurship initiative, will also be represented.
